JERUSALEM (AP) — Doctors in Israel held a two-hour strike Wednesday to protest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to overhaul the country’s judiciary. The doctors say the plan will endanger public health by granting Netanyahu and his allies greater control over the country’s healthcare system. Wearing scrubs and holding signs saying, “We are the wall shielding democracy,” doctors gathered outside Ichilov hospital in Tel Aviv. Medical leaders warned they will take more severe measures if Netanyahu’s government — the most right-wing in Israel’s 75-year history — moves forward with a bill to limit the judiciary’s oversight powers which could become law as soon as next week. In a letter to Netanyahu on Tuesday, Dr. Zion Hagay, chairman of Israel’s Medical Association, said the bill would lessen the judiciary’s ability to strike down inappropriate appointments to the healthcare system. “As someone who once served as health minister, you are ...

LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak apologized Wednesday for the treatment of gay veterans, saying a previous ban on LGBTQ+ people serving in the U.K. military was “an appalling failure of the British state.”The apology came after an independent review published Wednesday estimated that hundreds of veterans were dismissed or suffered under an official ban on homosexuality in the British armed forces that was enforced until 2000.“As today’s report makes clear, in that period many endured the most horrific sexual abuse and violence, homophobic bullying and harassment, all while bravely serving this country,” Sunak told Parliament. “Today, on behalf of the British state, I apologize.”The report, which was carried out by a retired senior judge, compiled evidence from more than 1,000 veterans. It documented the effects of what it called “an incomprehensible policy of homophobic bigotry in our armed forces.” Some of the victims have taken their own lives, while ot...

(The Hill) - Panic has turned to preparation for professors and teachers as they look ahead to a new school year dealing with artificial intelligence.Educators have had several months since the initial shock of ChatGPT and other AI bots that quickly infiltrated schools to reimagine classrooms and homework that fit the new age of technology. The preparation has taught educators two things: AI isn’t yet as smart as they thought, and they need to be more creative in their assignments. “There's been a shift from being overwhelmed with what's happening and trying to make sense of how to respond to all of the questions that they were getting, about ChatGPT, whether it's cheating or jobs or what have you, and that has evolved into I would say an acceptance,”Alex Kotran, co-founder and CEO of the AI Education Project, said. The initial panic among educators largely stemmed from cheating concerns. Teachers did not know what to do with tools such as ChatGPT that could seemingly...

One-quarter of adult children estranged from a parent

(The Hill) -- More than one-quarter of young adults are estranged from one or both parents, or have been, a finding that suggests a societal shift away from the traditional bonds of family. Several recent studies, articles and hot-selling books have hinted that young America is rejecting the biblical adage, “Honor thy father and mother,” along with the attendant concept of compulsory kinship. Instead, young adults are picking who will populate their families.  One recent study, drawing on thousands of interviews with adult children, found that 26 percent reported estrangement from fathers. A much smaller share, 6 percent, had cut ties with mothers. The findings appeared in the April issue of the Journal of Marriage and Family. “I think it relates to this new desire to have healthy relationships,” said Rin Reczek, a sociology professor at the Ohio State University and lead author of the study. “There might be some cultural shifts around people being allowed to choose w...
