“A Living Remedy,” by Nicole Chung (Ecco)In 2018, Nicole Chung published the bestseller, “All You Can Ever Know,” about being put up for adoption by her Korean parents and raised by a white couple in rural Oregon. With a few years of finishing the book, her adoptive parents were dead, her dad at 67 and her mom at 68. The latter occurred at the start of the pandemic, when it was all but impossible for Chung, who by then had a husband and two young children of her own, to spend time with her.Now Chung, 41, a magazine writer who lives in the Washington, D.C. area, has written a follow-up memoir, “A Living Remedy,” about the unbearable grief of watching one parent, then the other, die, and her debilitating guilt about not being able to do more to help them. When Chung was growing up, her dad managed pizza restaurants and her mom worked mostly office jobs. They had limited or no health insurance, and when he became gravely ill, he was too young for Medicare and too proud to apply for disa...Martha’s Table hosting new spring fundraiser

One of Kingston’s food charities is kicking off what they hope becomes an annual fundraiser in the city. This year the fundraiser is coming at a time when Martha’s needs funds to support the expansion of the charity’s operating space after they managed to purchase the other half of their semi-detached building in December of last year. That space was previously a doctor’s office, and so requires renovations in order to turn the interior into an open space fit for hosting in person breakfast, lunch and eventually, dinner. Executive Director Ronda Candy said they opened up part of the space as a warming centre during the winter in order to utilize what they had, but they’re looking forward to being able to bring more socializing back to Martha’s mission. While the charity had been able to raise and save enough over the years to support capital expansion and the purchase of this building, more fundraising is now needed to help with the renovations and...Timing, totals for Pinpoint Weather Alert Day Tuesday

One of the hardest hit areas in the country, Arkansas, is now getting help from South Florida. Supplies are being packed and shipped. At the Global Empowerment Mission in Doral, they are prepared to respond whenever a disaster strikes. “We have volunteers from the Miami area in our warehouse every week, packing boxes, either for active disasters or disasters that will happen,” said Emily Fullmer, vice president of operations at GEM. Last week, GEM responded on the ground to the devastating tornadoes in Rolling Fork, Mississippi. On Monday, they sent supplies and crews to Little Rock, Arkansas where more tornadoes ripped apart the community. “Our team is meeting with the emergency operations center, the mayor’s office, local churches as they know the intimate needs of the community, and we will have distributions and boxes provided at shelters and hotels where residents might be displaced to,” said Kimberly Bentley, director of field operations at GEM. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Floridians will be able to carry concealed guns without a permit under a bill Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Monday, giving the governor another legislative victory as he prepares a campaign for president. The new law will allow anyone who can legally own a gun in Florida to carry one without a permit. It means training and a background check will not be required to carry concealed guns in public. It takes effect July 1.The arguments over the legislation were divided along political lines, with Republicans saying law-abiding citizens have a right to carry guns and protect themselves. They say most people will still want to get a permit because it will allow them to carry concealed weapons in states with reciprocal agreements and to be able to purchase guns without a waiting period. However, Democrats – pointing to mass shootings in Florida like the massacre at the 2016 Pulse nightclub in Orlando and the deadly 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Dougl...Chinese spy balloon was able to transmit information back to Beijing

(CNN) — The Chinese spy balloon that transited the US earlier this year was able to capture imagery and collect some signals intelligence from US military sites, a source familiar with the matter tells CNN.The balloon was able to transmit information back to Beijing in real time, the source said, and the US government still does not know for sure whether the Chinese government could wipe the balloon’s data as it received it. That raises questions about whether there is intelligence the balloon was able to gather that the US still doesn’t know about.Still, the intelligence community has not been overly concerned about the information the balloon was able to gather, the person said, because it is not much more sophisticated than what Chinese satellites are able to glean as they orbit over similar locations. The US also knew what the balloon’s path would be and was able to protect sensitive sites and censor some signals before the balloon was able to pi...100 Days to Indy Documentary Series kicks off April 27th
